Stefan Schultze is a German pianist/composer/arranger. For his work he already won an impressive number of awards and grants. Above all - the art in which he has reinvigorated the traditional big band format and led it into new dimensions. Schultze’s comprehensive approach is completely individual. It is grounded in a healthy reaction to the information overkill of our time.
Schultze sets his full-bodied music against this multimedia inundation. He filters sequences of material out of the overwhelming flood of impressions, as he tests out the usefulness of the relevant messages, structures and interrogates, places the information under the microscope in order to transform confusion into clarity.
Thus the passively surrendered object transforms into an actively invasive subject – an emancipating process based on concentration and the ability to keep to the matter at hand. It is an act of reduction, a liberating blow against any external control.
The objective is to be aware of the highly-charged impressions, to detect, grab on to and keep the kernel, the essence in play, enlarging and evolving the core. This has something regulative, something that curbs the tempo and instils order, and it all takes place in diverse ways. It defines Stefan Schultze’s concentrated forcefulness, his ability as soloist to carry the weight of the music.
Schultze keeps to the point: emphatic, emotional, suggestive, remaining conscious of the structure, and with the listener in mind.
