Composer and vibraphonist Simon Kanzler titled his previous CD "Double Identity", a clear reference to the sense that there were at least two souls inhabiting his music. His initial compositional ideas also contained the intimations of the necessary instrumentation. At that time he wrote for a jazz quintet with two basses and a chamber ensemble; now, on “Nodía Es”, the focus is on a five-part choir replete with shouts and growls coupled with a sextet composed of vibraphonist Kanzlar, keyboardist Liz Kosack, guitarist Daniel Bödvarsson, tenor saxophonist Otis Sandsjö, bassist Dan Peter Sundland and drummer Valentin Schuster. Simon Kanzler is fascinated by artistic opposites: Alpha and omega, loud and quiet, improvisation and notation, emotion and intellect, abstract and concrete, traditional and ultramodern ... When it comes to his musical projects, Kanzler concentrates on the unexpected and the consequent unprecedented results; he achieves this with an artistic purity devoid of pretention. "Nodía Es" can be described as a “chamber opera” in which the initial alienation quickly turns into fascination and enthusiasm. The music’s focus has a sensual depth that is as entertaining as it is intense. The band’s sound is idiosyncratic, eccentric, at times outlandish, and the singers range from lyrical to rhapsodic. Using classical opera as a starting point, the music quickly leads straight into new territory.
